BOTOX® TREATMENT FOR Jaw tension, bruxism, & tmj

Botox® is used as an alternative treatment for TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorders, bruxism, and associated jaw tension and pain. Located on both sides of the head at the point where the jawbone meets the skull is the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ). We use our TMJ constantly during talking, eating, swallowing, and other everyday activities. If this joint becomes displaced, or is overworked through excessive teeth grinding, a person may suffer severe tension headaches as well as sharp pain or clicking in the jaw (TMJ Disorders). Botox®, a purified protein, is intramuscular, blocking the chemicals that cause facial muscles to contract, thus relieving jaw tension by making muscles unable to engage and create the powerful, often unconscious movement of the jaw that produces headaches and pain.

The Botox® alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and jaw tension is usually very quick. A non-surgical procedure, the injections are administered in a our office by our doctors, Robert J. Beall, DMD, FICOI, AFAAID and Robert J. Beall, DMD, FICOI, AFAAID, Patricia L. Blanton, DDS, MS, PhD, Ashley E. Christopher, DMD or Anna E. Borden, DDS and most patients experience noticeable improvement within one or two days.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment

Patients often seek treatments to slow facial aging while avoiding surgery and patients who have had surgery seek methods to maintain their cosmetic surgical results as long as possible. Botox® Cosmetic tackles both these issues by slowing the aesthetic appearance of aging by softening static lines and eliminating dynamic lines. Oral and maxillofacial surgical specialists, like our Robert J. Beall, DMD, FICOI, AFAAID, Patricia L. Blanton, DDS, MS, PhD, Ashley E. Christopher, DMD or Anna E. Borden, DDS, have extended hospital exposure and the training to administer Botox® Cosmetic.

Static Lines: Static lines are facial wrinkles, or rhytids, that appear while your facial muscles are at rest. As we age, we lose the elasticity in our collagen links and the plumpness (sub-dermal atrophy) in our skin to form these static lines. They are best treated with dermal fillers, skin resurfacing, or the removal of excess skin with face-lifting but not Botox®.

Dynamic Lines: Dynamic Lines are the result of your skin’s static lines folding over during facial animation (frowning, smiling, etc.). Dynamic lines can be softened with surgical and laser treatment but never eliminated because they are a result of continued facial muscle movements. The only way to dramatically soften dynamic lines is with Botox treatments every 3–4 months. This is especially true of smile lines around the mouth and eyes.

Botox® Cosmetic, administered via a few tiny injections, can improve the appearance of your “frown lines” in just a few days and may continue to improve for up to a week. Visible results can last up to 3–4 months. After that, you may be ready to return for a follow-up treatment.

Juvéderm™ Fillers

Graphic showing the benefits of Juvederm treatmentsAllergan, the same company that manufactures Botox®, has recently introduced the dermal filler, Juvederm to the US market. Juvederm, a super smooth consistency gel, has the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid for fillers on the market, providing smoother and longer lasting results.

With Juvederm, the results are immediate with minimal downtime. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing and instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm can be used virtually anywhere on the face, with most success in the lips, nasolabial folds (smile lines), and the marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth downward to the jawline).
